Among the best mid-size choices. They are small enough for a flat, robust in the heat thanks to the short coat, and need moderate rather than heavy exercise. The one genuine caveat is noise — Beagles bay, and it carries through walls.

They bay, which is a carrying, musical howl quite different from a bark. In a detached house it is charming. In a flat with shared walls it needs managing from the first month with a reliable "quiet" cue. It is the most common reason Beagles are rehomed in cities.
