A vaccinated German Shepherd puppy costs ₹18,000–₹30,000 in Kolkata as of August 2026. Puppies from hip-screened, working-line or show-line parents with full KCI papers sit at the upper end. Be cautious of anything near ₹10,000 — that price rarely covers a screened litter.

For Kolkata we suggest the standard stock coat. Both are the same breed and both shed, but the long coat carries noticeably more insulation and takes longer to dry after a monsoon walk. The stock coat is simply the more practical of the two here.

Usually not, and we say so honestly. The breed is intelligent enough to exploit inconsistent training and strong enough that mistakes are hard to undo later. If it is your first dog, plan to work with a trainer from week one — or consider a Labrador, which is far more forgiving.

Mental work matters more than floor space. A Shepherd in a flat that gets two long walks, daily training sessions and problems to solve does better than one left alone in a yard. That said, they are large, they shed heavily, and stairs are hard on growing joints — a ground floor or lift building is worth having.

With their own family, yes — loyal, protective and tolerant of children they have grown up with. They are naturally reserved with strangers, which is the trait people want and also the one that needs managing. Heavy socialisation between eight and sixteen weeks is what separates a confident adult from a reactive one.

An hour to ninety minutes, split across morning and evening, plus fifteen minutes of training or scent work. This is a working breed — physical exercise alone does not settle them. Owners who add obedience, tricks or puzzle feeders report a dramatically calmer dog indoors.

Continuously, and heavily twice a year. Brush two or three times a week with an undercoat rake, more during the seasonal blow. The coat must never be shaved — it insulates against heat as well as cold. Bathing every eight weeks or so is sufficient.

Three meals daily to four months, then twice daily for life. Budget ₹3,500–₹5,000 a month once grown. Never feed immediately before or after exercise, because of bloat risk.

Hip and elbow scores for both parents, with certificates you can see. This is the single most useful question you can ask about a Shepherd litter, and a breeder who cannot produce them is either not screening or not being straight. Also ask about degenerative myelopathy in the line.
