Caring for Indian Spitzes in Kolkata
Easy-care coatThis is the breed to beat for Indian conditions, because it was developed here. The double coat looks heavy but is far less dense than a northern breed's, and it regulates temperature efficiently — brush two or three times a week so air moves through it and that is genuinely the whole routine. Walks suit the early morning and evening like any dog here, and the Spitz is content with a modest amount. Never clip the coat; brushing the undercoat out is what keeps the dog comfortable.

The breed developed for this country
The Indian Spitz was bred in India through the twentieth century for Indian homes and Indian conditions. That heritage is the whole argument for the breed: it handles the heat, it copes with the humidity, it needs modest exercise, it lives twelve to sixteen years, and it costs less to buy and less to feed than anything comparable.
If someone asks us for a small, bright, affectionate dog and has no strong view on breed, this is usually our first suggestion.
What you get for the price
At ₹6,000–₹12,000 the Spitz is the cheapest pedigree breed on our list, and the low price is about supply rather than quality — the breed is widely bred across India. That does mean quality varies, so be selective.
Look for a puppy that is bright-eyed and confident, with a clean coat and no discharge from eyes or nose. Ask to see the mother, and ask for the vaccination card with dates and batch numbers.
The one thing to train early
Spitzes are alert and they bark. That makes them genuinely useful watchdogs and mildly inconvenient in a housing society with shared walls. Work on a reliable “quiet” cue from the first month and it stops being an issue — leave it and it becomes a habit that is much harder to unwind later.
Indian Spitz questions
How much does an Indian Spitz puppy cost in Kolkata?
An Indian Spitz puppy costs ₹6,000–₹12,000 in Kolkata as of August 2026 — the most affordable pedigree small breed we sell. The low price reflects how widely the breed is bred in India, not lower quality, so it is worth being selective about the breeder rather than the price.
What is the difference between an Indian Spitz and a Pomeranian?
They are separate breeds, though often confused and sometimes sold interchangeably. The Indian Spitz is larger — five to twelve kilograms against a Pomeranian's two to three — with a less profuse coat, a longer muzzle and a calmer temperament. The Spitz is also considerably cheaper and better adapted to Indian conditions.
Is the Indian Spitz good for a Kolkata flat?
Among the best choices available. It is small, needs only moderate exercise, copes with the climate better than any imported small breed, and is long-lived. The one thing to weigh is noise: Spitzes are alert and announce visitors enthusiastically.
Are Indian Spitz dogs good with children?
Yes — they are sturdier than a toy breed, playful, and tolerant of normal family handling. They are a common first family dog in India for exactly that reason, and they bond closely with children.
How much grooming does an Indian Spitz need?
Brushing two or three times a week, more during seasonal shedding. The coat is self-cleaning to a useful degree and rarely mats. Never clip it — the coat regulates temperature in both directions, and brushing the undercoat out is what keeps the dog comfortable in summer.
Are Indian Spitz dogs easy to train?
Very. They are bright, food-motivated and eager to please, which makes them a genuinely good choice for a first-time owner. Start early on controlling the barking, since alertness is the trait that most often needs shaping.
What should I feed an Indian Spitz?
Three meals a day until four months, then twice daily. Budget ₹1,000–₹1,800 a month for good-quality food once grown — the lowest running cost of any breed we sell. Weekly tooth brushing matters more than in most breeds.
What vaccinations does an Indian Spitz puppy need?
The standard Indian schedule: DHPPi at six to eight weeks, boosters at ten to twelve and fourteen to sixteen weeks, anti-rabies from twelve weeks, and deworming from two weeks. Every puppy leaves with a vaccination card showing dates and batch numbers.
Is the Indian Spitz recognised by the KCI?
Yes, the Indian Spitz is a KCI-recognised breed. Where the parents are registered and the litter qualifies, the registration paperwork follows after purchase. We tell you at the outset whether your puppy qualifies.
