Dog shops in Kolkata — and what to check

The difference between a dog shop and a breeder in Kolkata, what each can honestly tell you about a puppy, and the questions worth asking whichever you buy from.

Short answer

A dog shop sells puppies it has bought in; a breeder sells puppies born on its own premises. The practical difference is that a breeder can show you the mother and the conditions the litter was raised in, and a shop usually cannot. If you buy from a shop, ask where the puppy came from and how long it has been there.

Why the distinction matters

Both words get used loosely in Kolkata, and plenty of places advertise as one while operating as the other. What actually matters is not the label but whether the person selling you the dog can answer questions about where it came from.

A breeder can. The litter was born on the premises, so the age is exact, the mother is there, and the conditions are visible. A shop is reselling, so its honest answer to most of those questions is “I was told”.

That is not necessarily damning. A careful shop that sources from two or three breeders it trusts is a reasonable place to buy. A shop that cannot tell you where a puppy came from is not.

What we are

We breed. The dogs live at our kennel in Birati and the litters are born there, which is why we can invite you to meet the mother and why we would rather you took us up on it.

If you are weighing us against a shop, the comparison above is the honest one — it is what you can check, not who is nicer.

Checklist

  • Ask where the puppy was born and how long it has been on the premises.
  • Ask to see the mother. If she is not there, ask why, and where she is.
  • Read the vaccination card for dates and batch numbers rather than accepting ticks.
  • Confirm the puppy is at least eight weeks old, and ask how that is known.
  • Get the price, breed, age and inclusions in writing before paying anything.
  • Watch the puppy move and interact for a few minutes rather than only holding it.

What every puppy leaves with

  • Vaccinated & dewormed Age-appropriate DHPPi course and deworming complete, with a vaccination card showing dates and batch numbers.
  • KCI papers where eligible Where the parents are registered and the litter qualifies. The registration paperwork follows after purchase — not every puppy qualifies, and we say so upfront rather than after.
  • Hand-carried delivery A handler travels with the puppy the whole way. Free across Kolkata and its suburbs, a flat charge beyond — we absorb the rest of the journey cost.
  • After-sale support Feeding, vaccination schedule, house-training and the first vet visit — call us any time, for as long as you have the dog.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a dog shop and a dog breeder?

A shop buys puppies from elsewhere and resells them; a breeder produces them on its own premises. The consequence is that a breeder can show you the mother and the conditions the litter grew up in, and a shop generally cannot.

Are pet shops in Kolkata a bad place to buy a dog?

Not automatically — some are careful about where they source from. But you lose the two most useful checks available to a buyer, seeing the mother and seeing the conditions, so you are relying on the shop’s judgement instead of your own.

Is Flower Pets a shop or a breeder?

A breeder. The dogs are bred and raised at our kennel in Birati, north Kolkata, and buyers are welcome to visit and meet the mother before deciding anything.

What should I ask a dog shop before buying?

Where the puppy was born, how long it has been in the shop, its exact age and how that is known, and whether the vaccination card carries batch numbers. Vague answers to any of those are worth taking seriously.

Do shops charge more or less than breeders?

Usually more, because a margin has been added to what the shop paid. The larger difference is what you can verify for the money rather than the number itself.

Can I visit your kennel in Kolkata?

Yes. It is in Birati, roughly fifteen minutes from Dum Dum, and we would rather you came. Call first so someone is free to show you the dogs properly rather than between other jobs.
